Song written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Partick Thistle's famous 1971 League Cup victory over Jock Stein's star-studded Celtic side.

The Team Of '71

The date was October the twenty third nineteen seventy one
More than sixty thousand gathered at the national stadium
Where the newly promoted Jags, average age, under twenty two
Were four goals to the good by the time the half time whistle blew

No one will, ever forget, the team of 71
Against all the odds, McParland's boys
Got the business done
And I'm hoping that I live to see their faces carved in stone
On a statue on Firhill Road

And although the Harry Wraggs had played some exhilarating stuff
The red faced pundits still believed that four wouldn't be enough
But Stein's eleven made no impression as the minutes slipped away
It was David McParland who masterminded victory that day

We had Roughie between the posts, soon to be Scotland's No,1
Hugh Strachan, Jackie Campbell, Alex Forsyth and John Hansen
Frank Coulston, Ronnie Glavin, Bobby Lawrie and Alex Rae
Johnny Gibson, Jimmy Bone and Dennis McQuade

The date was October the twenty third
Nineteen Seventy One
We sent red and yellow shock waves
'Round the national stadium
And a handful of Lisbon Lions, new bhoys
Macari, Dalglish and Hay
Were well and truly humbled by the Thistle boys that day
