Poor Little Rich Town All eyes are focused on the one with the famous face Flanked by bodyguards, scrapping for a parking place In the early days she was a major player Now she makes a living as a headline maker Poor little rich girl plays it for the cameras well We'll get it fixed but we'll never ever get it solved We'll call you right back from the other side of the world You'll get slapped back down if your tail don't wag For a ten pound shit, in a one pound bag In poor little rich town no-one ever says a thing The lights are dimming down as the conversation dips You can almost feel the pleasure at your fingertips Till words of weariness escape the censors' lips And smother the old town (don't smother the old town) And smother the new town (don't smother the new town) And covers the uptown (don't cover the uptown) And smothers the downtown (don't smother the downtown) He takes another pill but it doesn't do any good He wishes that his new head doctor understood That the pains and the aches are a permanent fixture Of living on the edge of a faded picture Poor little rich town, when did your good times end? When did the good times end?

New Year Reflection Song Blowbacks and bongs, kicking back, trading songs In a bedsit in a humble part of town Long afternoons, singing long lost tunes If only we had taken time to nail them down We didn't stay in touch like we said we would Maybe I could have done more, it's true A lone star shining brightly in a sinister sky Is how I always will remember you Im always amazed by your flair on the green baize You always hold your nerve to see it out In sticky situations, intense complications You'll save the day, it never was in doubt Yours is the number that i'd always call, if my life was on the line On more than one of my crashes, you picked up my pieces, You've always been a friend of mine Through all of the good days, those heartbreaking sad days You'll always be a friend of mine Do me a favour, pass this message on. Tell your sister i'm doing fine She was there at the start, and lives on in my heart And she'll always be a friend of mine Motorway madness, frustration and sadness As time began to steal what could have been Busted guitars, one too many jaded bars In the best band that nobody's ever seen My thoughts drift back I hear a ringing chord that gets me each and every time To everybody in the band, let me shake you by the hand You will always be a friend of mine It's cold and empty on this stage, Though now we're on a different page You will always be a friend of mine And through every mistake that we've watched each other make You will always be a friend of mine

Ride The Tide I'll miss you when you're gone, I'll miss you every day Back-tracking on the things, I never got to say It's time for being strong. Surviving, holding on I'll miss you when you're gone I never got the chance, the chance to say goodbye You side stepped out of sight, and faded from my life You faded into dust. Move on from here i must I'll miss you when you're gone It sometimes takes a lifetime to discover That some pretend, But no one knows the answer You've got to ride the tide before you reach the shore You've got to ride the tide before you reach the shore I'll miss you when you're gone, of that there is no doubt The autumn winds may blow my windows inside out I'll ache all winter long, Till springtime follows on I'll miss you when you're gone It sometimes takes a lifetime to discover That some pretend, But no one knows the answer You've got to ride the tide before you reach the shore You've got to ride the tide before you reach the shore You've got to ride the tide before you reach the shore You've got to ride the tide before you reach the shore

She Talks In Whispers She's interfering with my phone line. She's intercepting the mail She's stealing every headline. She's got the wind in her sail She's got the picture that her cousin took. She says it's 4 out of 5 She's got her number in the phonebook She says she's finally arrived She'd rather talk about a hair cut. She makes it sound like a test She's only telling you a white lie. She's only doing her best She's the secret that i've kept so well. She reminds me of me She says that beauty's only sin deep She rents her halo for free She's got another thousand secrets. She's got another thousand lives She talks in whispers all the time She disappears from the window. She reappears in the hall She's hiding in the kitchen. She's coming out of the wall She's introducing me to 'Higher Ground'. She's seen the flaw in the silk She's turning up at all my family affairs She's still the crumb in the milk She's hitting well beyond the base line. She's on the road to repair She says she only ever feels fine when She's the reason to care She's got another thousand secrets. She's got another thousand lies She's talked in whispers all her life She's interfering with my phone line. She's intercepting the mail She's killing every punchline She's on a mission to fail

I Wish I'd Never I keep myself to myself, I feel much safer Didn't want my name in the morning paper I didn't want my face on the evening news But you made me an offer that I couldn't refuse I wish I'd never listened to you. I wish I'd never listened to you Always was a little bit easily led Didn't hesitate when you called and said 'You can't make a living out of measuring luck. This time next week you could give it all up' I wish I'd never listened to you. I wish I'd never listened to you Trusted all of your wayward plans The cameras rolled as the money changed hands Greed gushed out from every pore, I had it all but I wanted more The contract should have erased my doubt Seven per cent and a passport out Seven per cent of a valuable oil The centrepiece hanging in the public hall I was part of the plan, a cog in a wheel It didn't sink in, didn't seem real I put the details back in the envelope Took my first step on a slippery slope I wish I'd never listened to you. I wish I'd never listened to you Waited outside the museum all day It was all going well 'til the rain stopped play So we headed round to the penny arcade To confiscate every penny they'd made Didn't expect it to be so easy. Didn't expect it to go so well Put one man down and the others soon ran Into the range of the lookout man Headed for the hills but we didn't get far I was hiding in the back of the getaway car Flashlights, cops, all over the place Blinded, caught, with a gun in my face I keep myself to myself. I feel much safer Didn't want my name in the morning paper Didn't want my face on the evening news But you made me an offer that i couldn't refuse I wish I'd never listened to you. I wish I'd never listened to you I wish I'd never listened to you. I wish I'd never listened to you

Break Me 03:40
Break Me What happens next? Should we try again? Once more? I know what happens next, I've seen it all before The last thing i need is some predictable replay I know i make mistakes, I make a new one every day Forget you and rewind. Erase you from my mind You won't break me. You won't break me I won't let you tear me apart You promised me forever. You promised me everything Yet it started out in summer and it ended early spring And though you walk between the raindrops now I can't wait until the day arrives when you will surely drown It's so easy to rewind. Erase you from my mind You won't break me. You won't break me I won't let you tear me apart I don't second guess, I know how it will be You're busy being you and I'm busy being me Go on and tell me that it's over You won't break me. You won't break me I won't let you tear me apart Where are you now? Do I really want to know? There's things I'd like to tell you but it's time to let it go I know you don't like to do things face to face So as i left i placed a note inside your favourite pillow case Forget you and rewind. Erase you from my mind You won't break me. You won't break me I won't let you tear me, I won't let you tear me You won't break me. You won't break me I won't let you tear me, I won't let you tear me apart

Into The Arms Of Yesterday A crowd has gathered in the growing gloom Some even still pretend to care They've been arriving since late afternoon Hoping to see familiar faces there My eyes are feasting on the harbour lights Where faded yellows turn to gold It's her sweet voice I always long to hear When there's a story to be told But I'm still on the outside, looking in I know these days I need some help Remembering to keep myself afloat Excited footsteps on the winding path That snakes up to the lighthouse door She falls into the arms of yesterday As new waves crash upon her shore We'd watch the sun go down, On this seaside town, one last time We won't need any help remembering As long as her star still shines She's the forgotten page of history With all her best lines scribbled out Cast off into the arms of yesterday Today will have to live without My eyes are feasting on the harbour lights Where faded yellows turn to gold It's her sweet voice I always long to hear Some day her story will be told

Song For EJ 02:23
Song For EJ Sometimes I think about the days I'm missing It's been three long years and counting I caught me wondering how you've been Going home with the sunday papers I spy with the nosey neighbours Somehow I knew you'd always win Hope you remember me though I'm gone Thought about you, and wrote you a song I'll disappear over the years So this is my song for you EJ Smiled together on a beautiful spring day Went to the coast, bank holiday monday We picked up seashells on the shore We just made it home before the clouds wept As we painted pebbles at the doorstep Knew yours would be the best for sure Hope you remember me though I'm gone Thought about you, and wrote you a song I'll disappear over the years So this is my song for you EJ Hope you remember me though i'm gone Thought about you, and wrote you a song I'll disappear over the years So this is my song for you EJ

Hymn From The West Coast I don't have a lot of time I don't have a lot of time For the zealot and the bigot The meddler and the crook I've never seen an answer in any sacred book I won't reconsider. It's not worth a second look I don't have a lot of time I can't see the things you see I don't know what you want from me I can't believe in something that I have never seen A sinner, saint then sinner, there is no in between For the blinkered and the bitter, the orange and the green I don't have a lot of time I don't have a lot of time I don't have a lot of time For the inquisitive inspector Who turns the other cheek The sullen chief objector, who's too afraid to speak For the narrow minded teacher, who tries to steer the weak I don't have a lot of time

Performer 02:38
Performer Deprived of daylight, does it sound right? Lose the hunger, rumour monger Pounds and dollars, button down collars Must have own room, must write new tune Assorted goodies, rented movies Airport screening, songs with meaning Acclaimed baloney, one trick pony Re-invent it, pay to print it Cut-throat booker, pressure cooker Sweet soul powder, play it louder Designer clobber, agent robber Sweet soul powder, play it louder Lipstick traces, famous faces Highs and dead ends, trophy girlfriends Pre-planned no-show, kingsized ego Downward spiral, suicidal Token flowers, golden showers Big mouthed insider, stolen rider Last years' singer, yellow finger Sweet soul powder, play it louder

So Much On My Mind Can't face that call, so I'm writing to tell you I'm sorry for leaving you behind Lately I've found pleasure in nothing Cos I've got so much on my mind It's like travelling home, on a one way ticket On the sharp edge of all that once was kind Scarcely time to stop and fix it Cos I've got so much on my mind Save the picture in my memory Till I restore my faded faith in me So I hold that thought, long enough to know that The cold light of day is on my side Numb to the wisdom of a lesson that's fading Locked out of all that once was mine Save the picture in my memory Till I restore your faded faith in me When you're tied to a life, of awkward pretending It's a world that can carve you up inside I've not given up on a happier ending But I've got so much on my mind

Picture River Who knows what lies beneath the picture river Flawed diamonds on the bed, lost forever Is today to be the day That i'll set eyes on you again? Move your mind along at picture river Deflect your thoughts away from gold and silver Let your sorrow disappear It doesn't count for much out here Sometimes you've got to pay and pay Not from a million miles away Twenty minutes from the motorway An acrobatic leap into the depths of crystal river Captured by the eye and kept forever Evening falls like a stone Within the hour the day is gone Sometimes you've got to pay and pay Not from a million miles away Twenty minutes from the motorway A hundred years ago, or maybe never? People gathered here at picture river The village band would come to play To celebrate another day
